Initial reaction: What are your immediate thoughts and observations when you view the music video?
My immediate thought and observations when I viewed the music video was that I did not seem like a real music video, it was more of a concert that was taped and was used as the video for the song. The song was basically about how music videos have become more popular than the radio. I actually thought that this music video was decent. They did not add any complicated effects, but the music video was still attention catching because it was slightly weird. The lead singer looked nowhere else and one of the backup singers was not as enthusiastic as the other. But this kind of gave me an idea that this video was supposed to be put that way. This video now a days would probably look weirder and have more complicated effects, but I'm guessing that this video had good visuals for 1979.
Analysis and interpretation: Describe the Principles of Media Arts as they appear in the music video. Why do you think the musician, musical group, or director created this music video? What themes are promoted in this video? Are they aligned with Gospel Values, or do they counter them?
The music video had good effects, as considering the fact that their technology is not as advanced as the ones today. This video went really well with the song, which would explain why this song was popular back then. The director decided to create this music video because they wanted to show the world how having visuals help the song. The theme that is promoted in this video is that now that pictures have been used as visuals for music, it seems that everyone has forgotten about the person who was big when only the radio was around.
Consideration of cultural context: What events may have influenced the musician, musical group, and director to create this music video?
Consideration of cultural context: What events may have influenced the musician, musical group, and director to create this music video?
I think that the events that have influenced them to make a music video is when they decided to make the music itself. The video was pretty ironic with the song because it is talking about how video made the radio old news, and yet the song itself has a music video. It is also the first music video to be revealed into television. Since the video came out, the directors were probably predicting that this song would be a big deal.
Expression of aesthetic judgment: How does the cinematography, acting and performance, choreography, storyline, special effects, lyrics, and musicality work together in the music video? How do the visuals affect your admiration or disdain for the song?
The acting, performance and choreography work with the music because it shows the deeper meaning of the song. Some songs need the visual to interpret the meaning of the lyrics. This song explains how video is the new thing, however the video takes it to more depth and adds to the lyrics and what the musician is trying to imply.
Ongoing reflection: How has your chosen music video influenced your reception of the song?
