Blog Entry #4: Beauty- Is it Really in the Eye of the Beholder?

1.  Why do you think people are portrayed this way in the media?

People are portrayed this way in the media because the society thinks that the skinnier, the better. That does not even make sense, why would one want to look so scrawny and weak? This is mostly portrayed by girls because they have become so insecure of themselves. They want to change the way that they look like because they want to copy the person that society calls "hot". The way that "Hot" people look now-a-days do not even look "hot". In fact, they look completely rubbish. They are so skinny, they are lighter than an average teenager... at the age of thirty. Whoever created this image of being skinny to the bone, have pounds and pounds of make up on their face must be a complete goon. Thanks to society, girls have become more and more insecure of themselves. It cannot only affect them physically, but mentally as well. Some girls are so insecure that they want to leave the world (You know what I mean.)

2.  How are you affected by the images you see?

Personally, I do not get affected by the images I see because I know that it is wrong to look like that. However, other people are, these images are so planted in their brain that they begin to think the way that the society does. It makes me really upset to think that these people are so insecure. Society should be teaching us how to accept ourselves and that being natural is better. Having those imperfections we find in our selves is how we should define perfection. Being different should be what society is teaching us. God created us with those imperfections and we should be thankful for it. It defines us, it is our identity. I do not like the way that the society is trying to shape us. The world is becoming more shallow.

3.  What can be done to reduce the amount of young men and women that are negatively affected by these images?

The society should begin showing commercials of being secure about yourself. Accepting those things about yourself that are different from the rest. People are fine just the way that they are, but they do not seem to accept that because the society has been trying to plant these things in our brains. To have perfect skin, to be built, have a nice body. NO. That's just unacceptable. They should show more commercials to make themselves feel important.

4.  What would your reaction be to a magazine cover where the subject isn’t all glammed up?  Is this a possible route that society should take?  Why or why not?

I would be so surprised that I will jump out of a window.

Seeing images like that in the magazine is impossible. The media cannot help but photoshop images, they want the people to look "Perfect". Looking perfect is impossible, and people should accept that. I hope that the day the magazine will do this comes because people need to get their self esteem and self respect back again. If something like this ever happens, I feel that they need to continue this route to get the self esteem back. A magazine that is natural, something that is finally acceptable... It might seem impossible because the society is still thinking this way. But maybe someday, someone will have the conscience to keep it natural.

  1. I hate how media today encourages to follow trend and that if we do not look or act a certain way, that we will not be accepted.

  2. I agree with your opinionated statements about all the media and their views of 'true beauty'. I myself don't really care much as well of these images that are being displayed, since I don't really mind them. But, to others they might be offensive. So interesting post and opinions :).

  3. Great opinions! I also do not get affected with these images. But to those who does, it increases their insecurities and lowers self-esteem . I dont like that images with people portrayed this way makes people feel less 'beautiful' because its unobtainable.
